The Modes

The core features of any life cycle are birth, existence and death. These three archetypal ways of becoming are called the modes in astrology: cardinal, fixed and mutable.

Power emerges in the cardinal signs of the zodiac (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn); cardinality allows new life to manifest itself and those of us with many planets in cardinal signs are accomplishment oriented.

Then power concentrates and creates continuity in the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius): they could be called the builders of the zodiac. With many planets in the fixed signs the lesson is to develop trust within your self.

A fact of life is that no matter how long life remains stable it has to end. As power is distributed in the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) it adapts and changes, in time it loses all definition and dissolves. These signs indicate how much energy we assign to change and to what extent are we able to adapt.

The Elements

Fire, earth, air and water: the elements can be used to understand how we direct ourselves. If you are born with a predominance of fire signs you are here to develop courage and willpower. If you are conditioned more by earth the lesson is prioritising and patience whereas air increases alertness and clarity of perceptions. When you are influenced mainly by water, feelings and the deepening of your intuition is where you will direct your energy and build your power base.

Three modes, four elements, and woven together they create the twelve signs. Each element goes through the process of emerging, stabilising and dissolving and at last we have something that we are able to understand a little bit better: the signs of the zodiac.

A cyclic process

The zodiac constitutes a cyclic process, six great purposes are being worked out in sequence: emergence from chaos (Aries and Taurus), unfoldment of its original potential (Gemini and Cancer) and expression of its potential (Leo and Virgo). Creative self-expression leads to a new level of experience and the stage of reorientation (Libra and Scorpio). The keyword for the Sagittarius and Capricorn mode of power is coordination, followed by the coming to seed that refers to the Aquarius and Pisces pair.
